Abilene, TX to Dumas, TX - 334 mi.
Our plan was to be ready to pull out at 7: 00AM and we did, after a big breakfast at the hotel and packing the cars.  It was surprisingly cool for West Texas in the summertime and the drive was beautiful and uneventful.  After all the problems we experienced yesterday, it was nice to simply drive and enjoy the scenery.

This is Martin’s first long-distance Model T tour.  He has really been enjoying the drive.  Many people think they would enjoy a trip like this but a long, hot day – over 12 hours on the road – can discourage even an ardent Model T fan.

Martin was still smiling tonight when we arrived at the Best Western in Dumas, Texas.  Of course, this is also the first Model T trip for my puppy, Marian Rose.  She was also smiling when we got here.

We had a good lunch at a Mexican restaurant in Turkey, Texas (the home of country swing singer Bob Wills).

The next town over is Quitaque (pronounced Kitty-Quay), the entrance to Caprock Canyon State Park.  We have driven through here several times and the best road actually runs along the East side of the park.  (Pass the park, keep going on as the road becomes a dirt road, turn left on the first road).  There are spectacular views of the canyon and we love the drive.

After leaving the park road, we turned up State Road 207.  It is a good drive through country that is flat, flat, flat.  Then you see a sign warning about a 10% grade ahead.  And suddenly the ground falls away and you go from flat land to the tail end of Palo Duro Canyon.  It is a scary, stunning, steep drive down the mountain followed by a scary, stunning, steep drive back up.  After reaching the top, it is flat again.  It is a good introduction to the mountains.

The rest of the drive was uneventful, flat and hot.  We drove around 330 miles and we were glad to finally arrive in Dumas.

The word from home is that Austen’s car is running and ready and that Ross has checked out the Fordor for him to drive.  They plan to load up the cars on a trailer in the morning and head for Colorado.  We hope to meet at Idaho Springs before we drive up Mt. Evans on Saturday.  Ross and Luke are sore and stiff but nothing broken or seriously damaged (except the Touring).
